About Orthodontics
How Orthodontic Treatment Works
Orthodontic appliances are made of metal, ceramic, or plastic. They may be removable or they may be bonded to the teeth. By placing a constant gentle force in a carefully controlled direction, over time the teeth are slowly moved to a corrected position.
The goal is to achieve a healthier, more functional bite and a more aesthetically pleasing smile.
Duration of Treatment
Orthodontic treatment typically takes several months to a few years, depending on the complexity of the case.
The duration of orthodontic treatment can vary widely based on several factors, including the complexity of the dental issues being addressed, the type of orthodontic appliances used, and individual patient needs.
These timelines can be influenced by how closely you follow your orthodontist’s instructions, how well you maintain your oral hygiene, and how frequently you attend your scheduled appointments. The orthodontist will provide a more precise estimate based on your specific treatment plan.
Life with Braces
Now that you have your braces, how do you take care of them? It’s important for you to know how to properly take care of your braces throughout your entire orthodontic treatment.
Emergency Care
True orthodontic emergencies are rare, but when they occur we are here for you. Call our office when you experience severe pain or have a painful appliance problem you can’t take care of yourself (using wax). We’ll be able to schedule an appointment to resolve the problem. If our office is closed there will be instructions on the machine how to reach a Doctor on call.
Brushing and Flossing
When you have braces, it’s very important to brush after every meal in order to keep your teeth and gums healthy throughout your orthodontic treatment. Be sure to floss once EVERY day.
Orthodontic Retention
Finally, your braces have been removed and your smile is beautiful, straight, and best of all, metal-free! However, your orthodontic journey isn’t quite completed. To keep your smile looking its best, you’ll have to wear a retainer to preserve and stabilize your results.
Retainer Instructions
Wear your retainer at all times, until the doctor instructs otherwise.
Take your retainer out when eating, and always put it back in its case! (Most appliances are lost in school lunchrooms or restaurants.)
